consumers Power company General Offices: 1945 West Parnell Road, Jackson, Ml 49201 * (517) 788-1636 August 25, 1982 Dennis M Crutchfield, Chief Operating Reactor Branch No 5 Nuclear Reactor Regulation US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 DOCKET 50-255 - LICENSE DPR David J VandeWalle Nuclear Licensing Administrator PALISADES PLANT - SEP TOPIC IX-3, STATION SERVICE AND COOLING WATER SYSTEMS By letter dated February 22, 1982, the NRC issued the final evaluation for SEP Topic IX-3 for the Palisades Plant.
The NRC evaluation identified concerns about a loss of the service water pumps due to a passive failure which could result in flooding of the intake structure.
Consumers Power Company's March 17, 1982 letter indicated that this concern had been evaluated and that an additional analysis would be appropriate.
The purpose of this letter is to provide the r~sults of that analysis.
Calculations performed by Consumers Power Company of the water drainage capability of the intake structure shows that the drainage capacity is adeq_uate to handle the largest postulated slot break. It was found that eq_uilibrium water level in the structure would be approximately 2' above the floor - a level which is still approximately 2' 8" below the limiting component (SWS pump motor windings).
Therefore, it is concluded that no operator action would be req_uired.
However, for additional conservatism, Consumers Power Company expects to replace one (1) solid 26 11 manhole cover with a grated cover.
This modification is expected to be implemented
. prior to the completion of the 1983 Palis.ades refueling outage.
