C. Earls UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 February 20, 2018 Ms. Victoria K. Anderson Technical Advisor, Risk and Technical Services 1201 F Street, NW, Suite 1100 Washington, DC 20004

SUBJECT:

RECEIPT OF NUCLEAR ENERGY INSTITUTE REQUEST FOR A PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING RECENT INSPECTION EXPERIENCE RELATED TO THE SURVEILLANCE FREQUENCY CONTROL PROGRAM

Dear Ms. Anderson:

This letter acknowledges receipt of a February 1, 2018, letter to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) from the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) entitled, Request for a Public Meeting Regarding Recent Inspection Experience Related to the Surveillance Frequency Control Program (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS)

Accession No. ML18046A928).

The February 1, 2018, letter was in response to a discussion between NRC staff and NEI at the Reactor Oversight Process public meeting on January 31, 2018 (meeting summary located at ADAMS Accession No. ML18045A014), in which the staff indicated support for the industrys request for a public meeting.

Also included in the February 1, 2018, letter, were NEIs concerns regarding a December 21, 2017, letter (ADAMS Accession No. ML17355A561) in which the NRC upheld a contested violation related to the surveillance frequency control program.

I appreciate your letter and look forward to NRC staff engaging with NEI and the public on issues related to the surveillance frequency control program. The NRC will contact NEI regarding our plans to hold a public meeting with interested stakeholders in the very near future.

Both Regional and Headquarters staff will be in attendance to discuss NEIs concerns regarding the surveillance frequency control program.

If you have any questions, please contact Blake Purnell by telephone at 301-415-1380 or by e-mail to Blake.Purnell@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/
