HEMORANDUM TO:
FROM:
SUBJECT:
brune 12, 1997 Joseph F. Williams, Project Manager Project Directorate II-3 Division of Reactor Projects, I/II Keith R. Wichman, Chief Section A
Materials and Chemical Engineering Branch Division of Engineering REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE FLAW DENSITY IN REACTOR PRESSURE VESSEL WELDS FOR BROWNS FERRY UNIT 3 The Materials and Chemical Engineering Branch is reviewing a BWRVIP-05 submittal which requests that the staff reduce the amount of inspection of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) welds.
This issue affects Browns Ferry as well as all other BWR 2-6 plants.
In our evaluations, we assume a flaw density to determine the probability of vessel failure.
We would like to utilize the Browns Ferry Unit 3 RPV examination results to confirm the density of flaws in vessel welds.
In order to accomplish this task, we need to know the flaw density in the Browns Ferry Uni't 3 axial and circumferential welds inspected during the Unit 3 Cycle 5 outage.
We also need to know the number of recordable flaws in the axial and circumferential welds.
Attached is a list of the information needed.
