This letter provides notification of the implementation of an alternate rod injection design that is in full compliance with the ATWS Rule, including equipment/manufacturing diversity.
TVA committed to provide this notification as part of the Unit 2 Cycle 6 outage completion letter (Reference 1).
As committed in TVA's response (Reference
- 2) to an ATWS inspection (Reference 3),
TVA has installed analog trip units (ATUs) from General Electric in the Alternate Rod Injection (ARI) system.
These ATUs are diverse from the existing Rosemount ATUs installed in the Reactor Protection System (RPS).

- 1) 'TVA replaced the existing solenoid valves with valves that contain position switches and provided valve position indicating lights, and 2)
TVA revised the applicable Surveillance Instruction to require once per cycle functional testing of the ARI solenoid valves.
