Dear Hr. Horn:
BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT (BFN)
NPDES NO AL0022080 NOTIFICATION OF UNPERHITTED DISCHARGE A
leak of sodium nitrite from the BFN unit 1/2 and unit 3 control ba chi llers was identified on June 30.
Chemistry personnel initiated chemical con ro ay treatment of the chillers on dune 30 by adding 5 pounds of reagent g
d sodi um nitrite to each system.
A leak was suspected when nitrates were detected in the unit 1
and 2 office building drain (discharge serial number (DSN}
110}
and the unit 3 control building drain (DSN 107).
No further chemical additions were made and immediate steps were taken to identify the location of the leak and repair the chillers.
Previous repai rs to the unit 1/2 chiller had apparently not been successful.
The sodium nitrite entered the Tennessee River via both DShs 107 and 110.
The total quantity of sodium nitrite discharged was less than 10 pounds and the estimated concentration at the diffuser discharge was less than 0.050 parts per million.
If your staff has any questions on this matter, please have them contact Hadonna E. Hartin at (615) 632-6695 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Sincerely,
~
