Descr'i tion of Dischar e

DSN 107 Unit 3 Control Building Drain The oil and grease content exceeded the daily maximum of 20 mg/1.

The oil and grease content of the discharge was 36 mg/1 on January 20, 1988.

Cause and Period of Noncom liance The cause of this noncompliance was not determined because communication of the occurrence was not prompt.

Two samples taken on January 25, 1988 contained 5 mg/1 oil and grease.

The maximum period of noncompliance was thirteen days.

Laboratory personnel were reminded of the need to immediately notify the Environmental Engineering Section of all noncompliances to allow investigations of their cause.

In addition, procedure revisions are being made to require prompt data review by the laboratory shift supervisor and to specify the permit limit on the data sheet.

DSN 110 Unit 1

8 2 Office Building Drain The total suspended solids (TSS) content exceeded the daily maximum of 100 mg/1 and the daily average of 30 mg/1.

The table below contains the dates and values of the noncompliances.

Cause and Period of Noncom liance One possible cause was iron oxide laden

,water drained from the hot water generator'n the control bay chiller room to the floor drain.

This was discussed in the. December OMR.

This system was drained in December so a maintenance request could be performed on a hot water recirculation pump.

Two flushes of this line were done on January 11 and January 24-25, 1988.

Another possible cause was identified as a sink in'the control bay used to wash cooking and eating utensils.

Food, soap, and grease from this sink may be resulting in the high and fluctuating total suspended solids content.

The following table lists the maximum periods of noncompliance.

Ste s Taken to Reduce Eliminate and Prevent Recurrence of Noncom 1 in Oischa~cie We are investigating ways to route the sink drain to the sanitary wastewater system.

If this cannot be done, the sink will be removed from service.
