February 15, 2022 The Honorable Thomas R. Carper Chairman, Committee on Environment and Public Works United States Senate Washington, DC 20510
Dear Mr. Chairman:
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is publishing the following document in the Federal Register:
Title:
Regulatory Improvements for Production and Utilization Facilities Transitioning to Decommissioning.
Description of the rule: The proposed rule would revise current NRC regulations for nuclear facilities transitioning from operations to decommissioning status to address several additional factors identified by the NRC Commission, including a graded approach to emergency preparedness; lessons learned from decommissioning experience to date; the advisability of implementing a requirement for licensees post-shutdown decommissioning activities reports to be approved by the NRC; and the role of State and local governments in the decommissioning process.
Dates: The public comment period will close 75 days after publication.
For more information, see the enclosed document.
Please contact me at 301-415-1776 if you have questions or need more information.
Sincerely, Eugene Dacus, Director Office of Congressional Affairs
