Nuclear Regulatory Commission 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 18406 SUSQUEHANNA STEAM ELECTRIC STATION NOTIFICATION OF A POTENTIAL DEFICIENCY ON COPED STRUCTURAL FLOOR BEAi~lS ERs 100450/100508 FILE 840-4 PLA-443
Dear Mr. Grier:
This letter serves to confirm information provided by telephone to NRC Inspector Mr. R. Gallo on December 14, 1979. Zn that conversationr Mr.
Gallo was advised that the above subject condition was under evaluation foz reportability under the provisions of 10 CFR 50.55(e).
The condition was reported in NRC Inspection Report 50-387/79-28 and 388/79-15 which identified several coped floor beams which were burned and cut beyond pzescribed lines. Bechtel NCR 4288 was prepared on August 1, 1979 to document the noncompliances cited by the inspection as well as similar nonconformances which were subsequently noted by Bechtel Quality Control. On December'l, 1979, the nonconfozming conditions were noted in Bechtel MCAR 1-43.
The MCAR identified 123 beams supplied by Industrial Engineering Works (ZEW).
Inspection results to date indicate there have been a total of 47 beams reported as having improper radii (under radius, square cut); seven (7) as having other coping problems (overcut less than 12")2 and eight (8) beams that are not accessible.
Inspection of beams procured from other suppliers under the same specification (C16) is underway. The results of these inspections will be used to evaluate the extent and the safety implications of the conditions.
This potentially reportable deficiency is under continued evaluation by Bechtel and PP&L Engineering gzoups. We have been advised by Bechtel Engineering that they will complete their evaluation in March, 1980. Based upon the satisfactory

Mr. Boyce H. Grier January 22, 1980 completion of the investigation, we will advise the Commission of the date by which a final report will be submitted should the conditions be determined to be reportable.
Since the details of this report provide information relevant to the reporting recgxirement of 10 CPR 21, this correspondence is considered to also discharge any formal responsibility PPaL may have for reporting in compliance thereto.
