50-38 An applicant for permits to construct and operate a nuclear power plant is required to meet certain requirements relative to radioactive 'liquid and gaseous releases which are discussed in Section 3a2.3 of the

.DES (p, 3-8).

The radiological impacts of these releases are discussed in Section 4.5 (pp. 4-12 -- 4-23).

As stated in Section 4.5.3, the staff concluded that there will be no measqr ab1e radiological impact on humans from routine operation of the plant.

Various postulated accidents are discussed

.j'n Section 6 of the DES.

The most pertinent pf these.postulated accidents

>lith respect, to radiological effects via the liquid pathway is the release of 'liquid-waste storage contents listed in Table 6.2 as class 3.3.

Assuming that the ruptur'e of such a storage tank occurs and all the contents are spilled onto the ground, the staff's analysis indicates, that the estimated'dose to the population within 50 miles of the station would be 0.1 man-rem.

This is a very small'percentage of the 110,000 man-rem estimated dose the same population will receive from natural background sources (see Table 4.9, p. 4-19).

'R Water uses in the vicinity prior to station operation are described in Section 2.3 (where.reference is made-to the FES-CP, see Appendix G), 'ahd the non-r adio'logical, effects of station operation are discussed in Section 4.3.

As

,you see from the figures in Table 4.3, the changes in, river water quality will

.be minor.

The chemical discharges from the station will be limited in accordance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit which is ff a

Dear Mr. Johnson:

R R

~ We must apologize for this late reply to your letter of April 12, 1979, which

,. has just recently come to my attention.

You expressed concern about tIIe potential radiological effects of the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station on water in the Susquehanna River which would be used for the Danville water supply.

Both radiological and non-radiological effects have been considered by the NRC staff in our environmental review of the project, as indicated in the enclosed copy of the NRC Draft Environmental Statement (DES) relative to operation of the station.

Thus, our assessmeqt in the DES indicates-that the Susquehanna Station should lpve noi significarlt e'ffects,on the Danville water supply.
