-260/85-53, 296/85-53 SUPPLEMENTAL RESPONSE Please refer to J.

A. Domer's letter to you dated January 6, 1986, which transmitted our response to OIE Inspection 85-53 for our Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant.

In item 4 of our, response', it was indicated that we would provide a description of the new calibration procedure by March 17, 1986.

Enclosed is a description of that procedure.

On March 17, 1986, Mike Hellums of my staff and Art Johnson of your staff discussed an extension to March 20, 1986 for submittal of this supplemental response.

ENCLOSURE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT OIE INSPECTION REPORT NOS. 85-53 The detectors to be used with the main steam line radiation monitor will be sent to the TVA radioanalytical laboratory in Muscle Shoals.

Procedures have been drafted which will have the detectors tested to meet technical specification table 4.1.b note 3 requirements'he detectors will be tested using a calibrated source field (Cs 137 1450 curies, field calibrated using an ion chamber traceable to National Bureau of Standards).

The test performed will be a response test for the upper decade, test for second decade for

leakage, and an overload test to determine saturation.

The main steam line radiation monitor will be calibrated to the detector installed in that channel.
