Dear Mr. Dent;on:
In the Matter of t;he Tennessee Valley Authority Docket No. 50-259 By letter from J.
A. Domer to you dated December 21,
- 1984, we submitted a
request for exemption from the test interval requirements of 10 CFR 50 Appendix J for the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant unit 1.
Through communications with your staff we were informed that, the requested exemption was unacceptable based on the number of components involved and the requested extension of time.
This letter provides additional information regarding the Browns Ferry unit 1 schedule.
Unit 1 is scheduled to shut down on June 1,
1985 to begin its cycle 6
refueling outage.
Because of possible unplanned trips on unit 1 or extensions in the unit 2 outage, it may be advantageous t;o operate unit 1 past June 1.
Therefore, we are hereby revising our requested exemption from Appendix J requirements to allow operation until July 12, 1985. Additional revisions to the exemption request are discussed in the enclosure.
If you have any questions, please get in touch with us thr ough the Browns Ferry Project Manager.
Very truly yours, TENNESSE VALLEY AUTHORITY Subscribed agcy sworn to be ore me this ~@~day of J

ENCLOSURE
REFERENCE:
TVA LETTER FROM J.
A.
DOMER TO H. R.
DENTON DATED DECEMBER 21) 1984 1.
In the referenced letter Appendix J exemption request, we provided justification for the exemption based on areas of high temperature causing heat stress.
In the referenced letter these areas were described as having a temperature range of 100 160 F by note 4.
A more accurate range would be 125 160 F.
Please consider that range for note 4 in review of the exemption request.
2.
Bellows X-14 IB and X-14 OB on the Reactor Mater Cleanup Line had notes 4 and 5 listed as being applicable.
Please remove note 4 from those bellows.
The note 5 remains applicable.
3 0 4 ~
The original request for exemption involved 114 components based on an extension of time until October 1,
1985.
Based on the revised request to July 12, 1985, the exemption request involves 70 components.
p l Browns Ferry unit 1 started up in cycle 6 on January 2,
1984.
Operation of the unit 1 until the request date of July 12, 1985 results in a period of approximately 18 months during which the components are under conditions of reactor operation.
