TENNESSEE VALLEYAUTHORITY CHATTANOOGA. TENNESSEE 37401 400 Chestnut Street Tower II September 14, 1984 Mr. Harold R. Denton,'Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555

Dear Mr. Denton:

In the Matter of the Tennessee Valley Authority Docket Nos. 50-259 50-260 50-296 As requested verbally by Robert Herman of your staff on September 7,

1984, we are providing the following information for the Br owns Ferry Nuclear Plant.

Specifically, we were requested to inform the NRC regarding whether TVA has implemented the recommendations made in General Electric Service Information Letter (SIL) 402 dealing with the nitrogen injection and vent header cracking problem identified in IE Bulletin 84-01. It was agreed that an initial response would be made by September 14,

1984, and that additional information would be submitted at a later date.

We have reviewed and implemented GE SIL 402 as appropriate for Browns Ferry.

The configuration of the nitrogen infection piping into the wetwell at Browns Ferry is different from the configuration at Hatch Nuclear Plant.

As such, the recommendations of GE SIL 402 may not all be directly applicable to Browns Ferry.

TVA will submit by October 5,

1984, a detailed discussion of how GE SIL 402 recommendations were or are being implemented at Browns Ferry. If a recommendation was not implemented a discussion of why will be provided.

Very truly your s, Subscribed an sworn to for me t te ~g day of TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY L. M. Mills, anager Nuclear Licensing 1984.
