ENCLOSURE

RESPONSE

TO DE G. EISENHUT'S LETTER TO H. G.

PARRIS DATED,MAY 29, 1984 - MPA F-55 (TMI IX.K.3.28)

"QUALIFICATXONOF,ADS ACCUMULATORS" BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT

Reference:

TVA letter from L. M. Mills to H. R. Denton dated July 8, 1983 D. G. Eisenhut's letter to TVA dated May29, 1984 contains a request for additional information concerning the long-term (100 days) capability of the Automatic Depressurization System

('ADS) valves.

As indicated in the referenced letter, we have determined that the FSAR design basis (minimum of five actuations post-accident) is met using only the ADS accumulators.

Modifications are required in order to meet the 100-day requirement for ADS valves given in NUREG-0737 Xtem II.K.3.28.

Descri tion of Modification Our planned modifications will consist of:

a) separating the drywell control air system into two separate trains and, b) supplying each train with pressurized nitrogen from one of the separate Containment Air Dilution (CAD) system supply lines which are designed for containment purge/pressurization to control post-LOCA hydrogen.

This modification will allow for recharging the ADS accumulators for long-term operation of ADS valves by opening manually operated isolation valves.

A six-hour timeframe is available in which to perform this manual action as discussed in the referenced letter and the operations will be controlled by an approved procedure.

The nitrogen storage tanks for the CAD system each have a supply of liquid nitrogen to provide approximately 100 scfm for seven days.

The drywell control air system normally consumes less than 35 scfm.

The storage tanks are located outside of the secondary containment and can be refilled within the seven-day timeframe.

Qualification The system for recharging the accumulators will not be seismically or environmentally qualified.

However, the portions shared with the CAD system are fully qualified including the storage tanks and the piping up to the manual isolation valves.

Because the system will consist of two redundant trains of relatively few active devices, it is sufficiently reliable to meet the requirements of NUREG-0737.

Schedule This modification will be completed in accordance with the Browns Ferry Integrated Schedule.
