ART.81%620 SEX 400 Chestnut Street Tower II October 20, 1981 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Mr. Denton:
In the Matter of the Tennessee Valley Authority Docket Nos.
50-259 50-260 50-296 The purpose of this letter is to formally notify the NRC staff regarding the plans of the Tennessee Valley Authority for performing r eload core design and analyses inhouse and to request a response as explained below.
On October 1,
1981 we met with members of the NRC staff in Bethesda, Maryland, to review TVA's plans for performing reload core design and analysis (RCDA) necessary to support licensing reload fuel cycles for the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant.
The following is a summary of the pro)ected schedule for submittal of reports to the NRC and the dates by when NRC approval is needed as discussed on October 1,
1981.
The first reload amendment based primarily on TVA analyses will be for cycle 6 of unit 3 and will be submitted in June 1983.
Approval will be needed by October 1983.
The schedule for submittal and review of reports describing TVA analytical methods is as follows.

Space-Time Kinetics T-H Stability Main Report-January 1982 Supplement July 1982 January 1982 Early 1983 Ear ly 1983 November 1982 Not a Topical Report.

Mr. Harold R. Denton October 20, 1981 As discussed during the meeting, approval of RETRAN by November 1982 is of particular significance because the unit 3 cycle 6 analyses will begin at that time.
We believe that review of the TVA RETRAN model will be facilitated by the generic RETRAN review currently in progress and also by the prior review of other utility RETRAN models.
In order to preclude impacting the above schedule, we request that you inform us in writing by December 1,
1981 if our submittals will be reviewed in the time frame requested.
Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Very truly yours, TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY
