Industry PRA Peer Review Guidance NRC Public Meeting December 12, 2017

NEI 17-07: Peer Review Guidance

• NEI 17-07 combines peer review guidance for internal events, internal floods, fires, and external hazards

- Supersedes NEI 05-04, 07-12, 12-13

• Draft was sent to NRC for review on December 1

- Anticipate comments from NRC

- Intend to address before finalizing

NEI 17-07: Peer Review Guidance

• Major enhancements

- Incorporated guidance on closure of findings

- Developed guidance on reviewing new methods during peer reviews

- Augmented discussion on concept of unreviewed/not reviewed

- Addressed lessons learned from over a decade of peer reviews

- Enhanced discussions on reviewer qualification and documentation

• Planned future enhancements

- Incorporate more detailed guidance on external hazard screening reviews

Peer Review Guidance Path Forward

• NEI 17-07

- Intend to work with NRC to identify any other enhancements to peer review guidance

- Interested in moving quickly to support upcoming risk-informed applications

• New methods review of particular interest for TSTF-505

• Likely needs NRC acceptance prior to next revision of RG 1.200

• NEI 12-13

- Will need some form of NRC acceptance, as many utility peer reviews were conducted using this

- Industry can develop gap assessment guidelines to address NRC comments, as applicable

- No intention to issue a revision of this document
