SUBJECT:

TURKEY POINT UNITS 3 AND 4 - CLARIFICATION OF RELIEF FROM REACTOR COOLANT PUMP EXAMINATION (TAC NOS.

77074 AND 77075)

The purpose of this letter is to clarify relief granted from examination requirements for welds and internal surfaces of reactor coolant pumps (RCPs) at Turkey Point Unit Nos.

3 and 4 in a letter dated October 17, 1990.

The staff's Safety Evaluation concluded that the relief from the examination requirements was appropriate and acceptable to the NRC staff and added that the licensee will perform a surface examination of a portion of the casing welds during the inspection interval.

The staff's understanding is that the licensee will perform a visual examination of the internal surfaces whenever a

pump is disassembled for maintenance.

This was part of the alternate examination requirements for Cast Austenitic Pump Casings included in the Code Case N-481, which was approved by ASME on March 5, 1990.

If you have any questions, please call Raj Auluck, Project Manager, at (301) 492-1480.

Sincerely, (Original Signed By)

Herbert N. Berkow, Director Project Directorate II-2 Division of Reactor Projects - I/II Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation cc:
