h January 1b, 19'V0 The Honorable Bob Braham Senate Office Building Washing ton, DC 20510 Dear Senator Graham.
The Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant is situated about 60 miles
.from our area. lt is considered by experts to be the most obsolete and poorly operated such plant in the United States.
In a recent examination of the qualifications of its operating personnel by the Nuclear Regulartory Commission, more than half failed the test. It has been cited repeatedly for security and operating vio-lations.
Thesr. deficiencies have
~ resul ted in the release of excessive radiation into our air and ground water.
Such radiation is cummulative and continuously harms us and our environment.
I It is for these reasons tha t I reques t your support 'for the
'losure of this dangerous and out-dated nuclear plant.

ByJACQUELYN SWEARINGEN States News Service WASHINGTON A citizens'roup founded by Ralph Nader is urging Florida Power 5 Light to retire the Turkey Point nuclear power plant rather than spend
$ 100 million to, repair the problem-plagued facility.
In a Dec. 15 letter to FPL President Robert E. Talion, Public Citizen officials' argue that it would be cheaper to close the
'lant permanently than suspend opera-t tions for 11 months while major repairs 1
are undertaken.
The organization maintains that in 14 instances where other U.S, reactors re-mained down for repairs after operating for a decade or morc, none of the reactors'erformances improved. The South Flori-da plant is more than 17 years old, the or-ganization adds.
FPL plans to begin work on the two nu-clear reactors at Turkey Point next No-vember, according to company spokesman Ray Golden. The proposed repairs include upgrading the emergency diesel generator and the security system.
"We know the value of that asset and with the $ 100 million expenditure we feel confident we can turn that into a pr e plant. To throw away such an investment, we feel that would be imprudent," Golden said.
Since 1986, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has put Turkey Point on the list of plants closely monitored by the fed-
, eral agency for a variety of problems.
