Kimberley Capron 474 NE 3rd St.
Boca Raton, FL 33432 12/19/89 Sire I am writing to you today to express concern about two issues.
The Turkey Point nuclear power plant here in Florida is a mess.
Florida Power and Light announced yesterday that it intends to spend over 100 million to repair this dangerous plant. I realize that Florida needs a great deal of energy for its growing population, but public health and the environment come first. Can we not develop some other source of power2 This plant has had numerous safety violations and I do not feel that it should be repaired; it should be retired.
The second issue of concern for me is also relating to nuclear matters.
Is it true that the Department of Energy is planning to build new plutonium refineries for weapons? If that is true, then we must halt this action right away.
The old Rocky Flats plant is a huge menace to public safety.
Did you know that there have been over 200 fires and numerous accidents leading to elevated. radiation levels around the plant'? Did you know that the Hanford facility in Washington has dumped 200 billion gallons of "low-level" radioactive Waste into nearby ponds and basins'nough damage has been done in the name of national security; we already have over twenty thousand missils. With all of the changes going on in Eastern
- Europe, maybe we should "cool our heels" a bit on
r
producing nuclear weapons.
And, if the need should arise, the U.S.
has over 200,000 pounds of plutonium stockpiled for bombs. With a "shelf-life" of over 24,000 years, I don't see the urgency in building new and dangerous plants.
I hope that you will look into these matters.
Thank you, Kimberley Capron
