Docket Nos.

Docket Nos.
50-335 and 50-389 RETRAN Code By letter L-86-04, dated January 7,
- 1986, Florida Power 6 Light Company (FPL) submitted to the NRC topical report NTH-G-6, "RETRAN Code Transient Analysis Model Qualification".
Additional information was provided in letters L-87-91, dated March 2,
- 1987, and L-87-164, dated April 10, 1987.
The Staff concluded in its Safety Evaluation dated April 19,
- 1988, (G.
C.
Lainas to W.
F.
Conway) that FPL had demonstrated the ability to use the RETRAN computer code to perform system transient calculations for these plants.
However, the Staff noted that the topical report did not present details in plant-specific nodalizations, control system modeling and assumptions for the licensing analyses.
On January 9,
Based upon FPL's identification of a planned application of the "Decrease in Heat Removal of the Secondary Side" event category, the Staff agreed to a
RETRAN limited-scope submittal.
- However, the Staff requested that FPL not use a piecemeal approach to developing a full spectrum of licensing analyses for RETRAN beyond that submittal.

As a result of the January 9,
1989 meeting, FPL is planning to supplement the RETRAN topical report as early as May 1989.
This supplement will present generic methods applicable to all four of FPL s nuclear units and will specifically be
- intended, at the
- outset, to support plant improvements for St.
Lucie Plant to implement reactor trip reduction activities.
