Dear Mr. Martin:

This notification is forwarded for your information pursuant to Appendix "B" of the Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant Environmental Technical Specifications. The subject of this notification concerns chemical cleaning of our sodium hypochlorite diffuser piping. This cleaning is required due to calcium carbonate scale which builds up in the diffuser piping.

Due to industrial safety concerns associated with handling hydrochloric acid previously employed, we intend to use a less hazardous chemical, Betz "Deposit-trol 855D," to dissolve the calcium carbonate.

Approximately 40 ml/min of "Deposit-trol 855D" will be fed for six hours to each diffuser. A total of four diffusers require cleaning at this time. We intend to clean the plant diffusers (11 total) approximately two to three times per year to maintain sodium hypochlorite flow to our lake water systems. Sodium hypochlorite is used to control zebra mussel settlement in the service water systems and to control slime growth in the condensers.

The deposits removed by this operation, consisting mainly of sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, and calcium carbonate, will be released via outfalls 001 and/or 002. A dilution flow of at least 690,000 gallons per minute will be achieved. The final concentration at outfalls 001 and/or 002 will be 0.016mg/liter.
