This notification is forwarded for your review pursuant to Appendix "B" of the Donald C.
Cook Nuclear Plant Environmental Technical Specifications.
The subject of this 'notification concerns a
release of ethylene glycol to the environment.
On December 14,
- 1993, an estimated 30 gallons of ethylene glycol was released to the soil at Cook Nuclear Plant near
- Bridgman, Michigan.
The ethylene glycol was released while changing tires on a front-end loader, where the glycol was being used as tire ballast.
The release occurred due to the unexpected collapse of the tire as the ethylene glycol was being pumped from the tire as part of our normal course of operation.
An area of approximately 100 square feet was affected.
Cook Nuclear Plant personnel quickly excavated the affected area to a depth of one foot and disposed of the resulting debris in a local municipal solid waste landfill.
Notifications regarding this event were made on December 20,
- 1993, to the National Response Office and to the Surface Water Quality Division of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR).
Written correspondence was provided to the MDNR on January 4, 1994.
