20555 Attn:
T. E. Murley November 2l, 1990
Dear Dr. Murley:
In our June 27, 1990 letter, AEP:NRC:1129, we requested a change to the Unit 1 Technical Specifications to allow sleeving Cook Nuclear Plant steam generator tubes as opposed to plugging them.
The purpose of this letter is to respond to a question by your staff regarding that letter.
As part of the above request, we indicated that there would not be a
significant increase in individual or cumulative occupational radiation exposure.
This statement is valid for the overall plant population.
Your staff correctly pointed out that personnel performing the activity may be subjected to longer exposure times during a sleeving project.
In response, dose estimates of 18 mrem per tube for plugging and 95 mrem per tube for sleeving have been calculated during the formal ALARA review for steam generator work.
This dose increase per tube may be considered significant; however, actual doses received during any sleeving evolution will continue to be controlled by radiation protection technicians to ensure that no individual is exposed unnecessarily and/or beyond acceptable criteria.
This document has been prepared following Corporate procedures that incorporate a reasonable set of controls to ensure its accuracy and completeness prior to signature by the undersigned.
Sincerely, M
. Alexich Vice President 90ii3000S9 90ii21 I DR ADeCV ov000"'iv PDC
