INDIANA 8 MICHIGAN ELECTRIC COMPANY P.O. BOX 16631 COLUMBUS, OHIO 43216 December 19, 1986 AEP:NRC:0838W Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant Unit Nos. 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-315 and 50-316 License Nos. DPR-58 and DPR-74 GENERIC LETTER 83-28 ITEM 2.2.1., EQUIPMENT CLASSIFICATION Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555

Dear Mr. Denton:

The purpose of this letter is to advise you of our'rogress in implementing the recommendations of Generic Letter (GL) 83-28, Item 2.2.1, Equipment Classification, and modify our previous response to this item regarding the new data base project. After the Salem ATWS event and during our review of GL 83-28, we recognized that, although the information system we had in place was adequate, it was cumbersome to use efficiently. Therefore, in our letter AEP:NRC:0838B (paragraph 2.2.1.6), dated March 30, 1984, we committed to having a computerized information data base program for D. C. Cook in place by the end of 1986. We believe we have fulfilled the intent of this commitment.

The D. C. Cook Facility Data Base (FDB) currently contains over 140,000 records of component/equipment items for which the safety-related status and procurement grades have been entered and verified. An FDB record contains not only a component name, unique number, and safety classification, but up Lo 48 other fields of information usable to plant maintenance and operation.

As may be expected, this database will require regular updating and change to adequately reflect the D. C. Cook Nuclear Plant Units 1 and 2. The existing procedures described in our AEP:NRC:0838B letter, dated March 30, 1984, will remain in place until such time as we are assured that a complete integration of all factors has been accomplished within the new system. Please note that we. consider the D. C. Cook FDB a living information retrieval system to which there may be additions and refinements. Therefore, even though there are some tasks remaining to be completed, the system is in place and in use. Furthermore, we have created an FDB Section and appointed an FDB Section supervisor to administer'he FDB at the Cook Plant site. We therefore respectfully request that you close out Generic Letter 83-28, Section 2.2.1 based on the information contained in this letter.
