DPR-58 and DPR-74 REQUEST FOR APPROVAL OF CONDUIT SEALING PROGRAM Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
20555
Dear Mr. Denton:
Following conversations with your staff regarding the requirements of Branch Technical Position (BTP)
APSCB 9.5-1, Appendix A, Section D.l.J.,
we wish to formally request approval of our conduit sealing program as described in our letter AEP:NRC:0692AG, dated September 13, 1985 (copy attached).
We remain committed to the position and program described in that letter.
We stated in that letter that we would cqnduct a walkdown to identify the conduits which penetrate a fire barrier and which are open at both ends.
At this point we have completed this walkdown and have identified open-ended conduits.
Although we have officially committed only to add one seal in double-open-ended
- conduits, we believe it will be more practical in many instances to seal the end of any open-ended conduits identified during the walkdown.
In addition, we are currently involved in a study and testing of conduit configurations to determine the need to internally seal conduit to maintain fire barriers.
Although this program was not requested or required by the
- NRC, we believe it is the best way to determine how conduit sealing should be handled in the future.
By July 31, 1986 we will provide you with a proposed schedule for the performance of both the conduit sealing and the study and testing program.
This document has been prepared following Corporate procedures which incorporate a reasonable set of controls to insure its accuracy and completeness prior to signature by the undersigned.
