Dear Mr. Denton:

This letter and its Attachments transmit the additional information requested in the above referenced letter regarding the seismic qualification of the Mercoid Pressure Switches and Switchgear Components. As requested in Mr. Varga's letter, a more legible copy of the Wyle Report No. 44285-1 dated October 26, 1978 (which is the same report originally transmitted in our letter of December 18, 1979) is hereby included in Attachment 1.

Functional verification of the type DA Mercoid switches was tested at Philco-Ford facilities in Palo Alto, California and is as shown in the test report dated May 5, 1970. Please note that our letter AEP:NRC:0001 dated May 19, 1978 stated that this report was current for the device at that time. Functional verification of the type DAW switches presently installed or being installed as replacement of type DA switches is enclosed in Attachment No. 1 to this letter.

Also the functional verification of the type DAW switches was independently tested by ACTON Environmental Testing Corporation for AEPSC. This information is enclosed as Attachment No. 2 to this letter.

We have elected to change over to the type DAW models since they have improved outer casings and better mounting provisions.

For the Switchgear components (600 v and 5 kv), the functional requirements were found to be acceptable by the NRC seismic I

P Mr. Harold R. De ton AEP:NRC:0001C qualification review team with one exception. (See page 3 of enclosure 1 to Mr. Karl Kniel's letter dated October 20, 1977) At the time of the NRC inspection it was found that the General Electric relay's functional testing documentation was n'ot adequate. The current seismic capabilities of the GE relays and/or switches was submitted as Attachment No. 2 to our submittal No. AEP:NRC:0001B dated March 28, 1980. If you need any further clarification on Switchgear Qualification please feel free to contact us.
