%p*y4 UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 NRC SAFETY EVALUATION OF

.TESTS TO VERIFY CONTAINMENT SUMP DESIGN In submittals dated September

1978, December
1979, and April 28, 1982, the licensee has provided reports describing the 1:2.5 scale model tests which were carried out to demonstrate ECCS sump performance during the recirculation mode.

The tests simulated several flow conditions and configurations encompassing those anticipated for the Cook ECCS These tests verified that modifications to the sump, as prescribed by the September 1978 study, would be effective in assuring acceptable sump performance at Cook for containment flooding elevations as low as 607 feet (taking credit for water added by ice condenser ice melt April 28, 1982 subIIittals).

Based on the applicant's implementation of sump modifications as recommended by the September 1978 and December 1979 reports and acceptable results reported in the April 28, 1982 submittal, we find that these tests meet the intent of applicable portions of Regulatory Guides 1.68, 1.79, and 1.82, and are therefore acceptable.

Me find that these tests satisfy the condition stated in our SER Supple-ment Number 7 for the Cook Unit 2 facility, Section 6.3.4 (December 1977).
