MARCH 1 'l 1980 Docket No.:

Cook Nuclear Plant, Unit No.

SUBJECT:
Meeting Summary - Brown Boveri Turbine The licensee and representatives of Brown Boveri met with the staff on March 6, 1980 to discuss the design features of the D. C..Cook Unit 2 turbine.
An
, attendance list is attached.
The Brown Boveri (BB) turbine is unlike the shrunk fit shaft units produced by Westinghouse (W) and General Electric (GE), in that the BB unit rotor shaft is made of high-quality forged disks that are precision-machined and welded together in the outer diameter regions of the disks.
This produces a frequency-tuned assembly with welds in the 1'ower stressed regions.
The welding introduces relatively little initial stress as compared with the shrunk fit disk rotors by W and GE.
The BB turbine blades are loosely attached to the rotors using a "Christmas tree" method.
The D.
C.
Cook unit was partially assembled in Canada, and the last stage 52-inch blades were installed at the site.
The Cook unit is supported by single sets of bearings at each coupling to facilitate alignment.
The thrust bearing is at the high pressure s'tage and away from the generator so that thermal expansion in the third or last low pressure stage results in about 1 inch of expansion or elongation of the rotor shaft.
The bearings are three-stage cooled with air-oil, vacuum-oil, and hydrogen-oil as the cooling medium.
More details and specifics are contained in the five BB publications attached to the file copy of this meeting summary.
