Docket Nos.

DPR-'58 and DPR-74 First Response to IE Bulletin 79-01B Mr. J.

G. Keppler, Regional Director U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Inspection and Enforcement Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This letter and its attachments provide our first response to IE Bulletin 79-01B entitled "Environmental gualification of Class IE Equipment" which was transmitted to us by your letter dated January 16, 1980 which we received on January 22, 1980.

A supplement to the Bulletin was telecopied to our office on February 28, 1980.

The attachments provide the information requested in Item 1 of the Bulletin.

We currently plan to address Items 2 through 5 in another submittal to be made by the end of the 90 day period indicated in Bulletin Item 7(b),

and hereby request your concurrence with this plan.

In making this request, we note that most of the Item 2 information for the equipment located inside the'ontainment (which is a large part of the equipment listed for Item 1) was previously submitted in our letters dated June 28, 1979 (AEP:NRC:153),

September 7,

1979 (AEP:NRC:153A) and October 15, 1979 (AEP:NRC:00277).

Information supporting the adequacy of the environmental qualification for a large class of equipment has thus already been submitted, although not pre-cisely in the same format as requested in Item 2.

Attachment 1 to this letter, entitled "Master List No. 1," is a system-by-system list of major pieces of equipment, such as valves, transmitters and pump and fan motors.

In Attachment 1, equipment which is required in each Unit for the indicated system and which also has the same plant identifi-cation number in each Unit, is listed on pages whose heading names both Units

Ci Mr. J.

C. Keppler, Regional Director AEP:NRC:00356 and which are color-coded pink.

Equipment which is required in only one Unit for the indicated system or which has a different plant identification number in each Unit is listed on pages indicating the Unit to which the equipment belongs and color-coded white for Unit 1 and yellow for Unit 2.

Because of our function - related choice of system names for this Bulletin

response, individual pieces of major equipment are in some cases included under more than one system.

Attachments 2 and 3 list the individual components wh>ch serve the major pieces of equipment listed in Attachment 1.

Attachments 2 and 3

list each individual component only once and on color-coded paper according to Unit, white for Unit 1 and yellow for Unit 2.

Attachment 2 is entitled, "Master List No.

2 Volume 1: Unit 1 Components" and Attachment 3 is entitled "Master List No.

2 Volume 2: Unit 2 Components."

Very truly yours, ohn E. Dolan ice President cc:
