Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary October 2017

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for October 2017. This month, we captured 34 Caretta caretta and 77 Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie Power Plant on Hutchinson Island. There were two sea turtle mortalities and four turtles were sent for rehabilitation. As with all sea turtle strandings at the Saint Lucie Plant (alive or dead), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and a stranding form was filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.

There were two causal mortalities this month. On October 3rd, a juvenile green turtle was retrieved from the power plant intake wells in poor condition. The turtle died while in transit to rehab and was transferred to Dr.

Nancy Mettee, DVM for necropsy. It was found that blunt force trauma had caused internal bleeding and the mortality was deemed causal. On October 7th, a fresh dead juvenile green turtle was removed from the intake wells with four deep wounds in its carapace. These injuries were believed to have been caused by the travelling screen and rake system utilized by the power plant and a later necropsy supported the preliminary causality determination. Both mortalities were considered causal and go against the take limit established by the most recent Biological Opinion set forth by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).

There was one causal injury this month. On October 7th, a juvenile green turtle was removed from the power plant intake wells with a puncture wound in its carapace from the travelling screen and rake system. Inwater Research Group (IRG) biologists transported the turtle partway to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) in Juno Beach for rehabilitation. This injury was classified as causal.

Three turtles were sent to rehabilitation centers for non-causal injuries this month. On October 18th, a juvenile green turtle was recovered from the intake canal with recent shark attack injuries. It was missing 90% of its left front flipper and had a crack in the anterior carapace. There were shark bite marks in the carapace and other cuts in the soft tissue. After consultation with FWC, IRG biologists transported the turtle to LMC for rehab. On October 8th, two emaciated and lethargic subadult loggerheads were removed from the primary 5-inch barrier net. After coordinating with FWC, Brevard Zoo personnel picked up and transported both turtles to their rehab facility for treatment. All three strandings were classified as non-causal.

On October 8th, UESI determined that the primary 5-inch barrier net had been impacted by Hurricane Irma, allowing larger turtles to pass through the net. After consultation with FWC, FPL directed UESI to fasten a 5-inch mesh net atop the existing 8-inch A-1-A net in order to prevent turtles from moving further down the canal.

IRG personnel continued to inspect the entire length of the intake canal (up to the security barrier) at least twice daily for turtles that may have made it past the primary or secondary barrier nets. Additional effort was also made to proactively capture turtles. On October 23rd, a small john boat was deployed between the 5-inch and 8-inch nets resulting in the dip net capture of one juvenile green turtle. Altogether, six juvenile green turtles were encountered west of the primary barrier net in October; the one turtle that was dip netted between the first two barrier nets and five turtles that were recovered from the intake wells (two released in good condition, two causal mortalities, and one causal injury).

The permanent 5-inch barrier net encountered moderate-to-severe loads of algae during the month of October.

IRG biologists performed around-the-clock monitoring of the intake canal and barrier net system either as warranted by sufficiently high debris intrusion levels or whenever directed by FPL oversight personnel.

Furthermore, Underwater Engineering Services inspected the 5-inch and A-1-A barrier nets weekly and removed accumulated algae and debris as needed. On October 24th, Morgan & Eklund, Inc. completed a bathymetric survey of the entire intake canal and Big Mud Creek.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2017. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet tracks all causal injuries and mortalities incurred by sea turtles at the St. Lucie Plant since 2004.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely, Steve Steve Weege Sr. Environmental Specialist Inwater Research Group, Inc.
