SEP Topic III-10.A, Thermal Overload Protection for Motor-Operated Valves R.
E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-244
Dear Mr. Crutchfield:
This letter is in response to your letter dated March 18, 1981 (received March 23, 1981) relative to this SEP topic.
As re-
- quested, we have included a summary of the listing of motor operated valve performance at Ginna.
The summary is comprised of data from Ginna maintenance records of 102 motor operated
- valves, and covers a time period of about nine years (1972 to the present).
Also attached is a typical Ginna safeguards MOV elementary wiring diagram.
As can be seen, limit switches and torque switches are used in parallel in both the opening and closing circuits of 'these valves.
In the open circuit, a bc limit switch (closed only when the valve is closed) bypasses the torque switch.
In the close circuit, an ao limit switch (closed only when valve is fully open) bypasses the torque switch.
These bypasses allow for a higher breakaway torque than the normal running torque.
This arrangement appears to meet the criteria stated in the second paragraph of your March 18, 1981 letter.
We trust this information is responsive to your needs.
Very truly yours, Jo n E. Maier Attachment
