REUSE OF CHANNEL BOXES FOR THE WASHINGTON PUBLIC POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM NUCLEAR PROJECT NO.
2 (TAC NO. H91068)
On March 20, 1990, the NRC issued Bulletin (NRCB) 90-02, "Loss of Thermal Margin Caused by Channel Box Bow."
The NRC requested licensees to evaluate reused channel boxes to verify';that current minimum critical power ratio (HCPR) technical'pecification operating and safety limits were met.
By letter dated December 1,
1994, ~the licensee responded to NRCB 90-02 for WNP-2 Cycle ll operations.
The NRC staff has reviewed the licensee's letter and finds that it satisfactorily addresses, the issues discussed in NRCB 90-02 for Cycle 11.
The NRC staff's safety evaluation is provided in the enclosure.
The NRC staff has also determined that the licensee should evaluate future reuse of channel boxes under 10 CFR 50.59.
Following this regulation, prior NRC review and approval is only necessary if the reuse involves an unreviewed safety question or a change to the WNP-2 technical specifications.
This completes NRC staff action on TAC No. H91068.
