SUBJECT:

WASHINGTON PUBLIC POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM NUCLEAR PROJECT NO.

2 (WNP-2)

EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR-2, SHORTED TURNS (TAC H82996)

By letters from you to the NRC dated July 27, 1990 (G02-90-130) and August 2, 1990 (G02-90-133),

you committed to performing a quarterly rotor pole a.c.

voltage drop test on the Division 2 emergency diesel generator (EDG-2).

This testing schedule was contained in WNP-2's justification for continued operation (JCO) that resulted from a shorted turn condition on one of the EDG-2 rotor poles.

The JCO concluded that EDG-2 was capable of supporting the operability requirements of the Technical Specifications and fulfillingits design function with the shorted turn condition.

In your letter of February 21, 1992 (G02-92-045) you provided information to support performing the pole drop test on an annual basis'he staff has reviewed this information and has no concerns regarding the change in testing frequency.

As noted in your August 2, 1990, letter, if the voltage drop testing results indicate abnormal results, the NRC resident inspector will be

informed, as the operability of EDG-2 may then be in question.

Otherwise, the staff requires no further information regarding this matter.

Should you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact me.

This completes our efforts under TAC M82996.
