Letter, G. C. Sorensen (SS) to W.

R. Butler (NRC),

G02-85-319, dated June 17, 1985 The purpose of this letter is to reiterate the request for interim approval of Revision 3a to the WNP-2 Pump and Valve Inservice Inspection Program submitted per Reference 2 (attached).

Reference 1 informed the Supply System as to the status of the formal review of the WNP-2 Pump and Valve Inservice Inspection Program but fai led to address interim approval of the program as was requested in References 2,

3 and 4 (December

1985, March 1986, and July 1986).

3a INTERIM APPROVAL approval should not pose a concern.

Revision 2 to the program received interim approval in the WNP-2 Safety Evaluation Report Supplement 4,

NUREG-0892 dated

December, 1983.

Supply System personnel met with the NRC staff and EGSG (the NRC contractor) in April, 1985 (Reference 5,

June 1985) to discuss Revision 2 and subsequent changes resulting from lessons learned due to transitioning from construction to operation.

Reference 5 forwarded questions from this meeting to the Supply System which were answered in the submittal of Revision 3 (Reference 6, June 1985).

During the next 6 months of operation, additional changes to the program were identified and submitted as Revision 3a (Reference 2, attached).

In

summary, a solid basis exists upon which to grant interim approval:

Revision 2 had interim approval by the staff; the staff, the NRC contractor, and Supply System personnel have met and discussed Revision 3 to the program; and the resulting questions from this meeting ha've been answered.

As stated in Reference 6, the Supply System considers Revision 3 to provide added assurance of material quality and public safety over that provided in Revision 2.

With the reviews conducted to date, the Supply System cannot discern any apparent obstacles to granting interim approval to Revision 3a.

Very truly yours, G.
