%~Jig The subject bulletin identified a problem relative to the cracking of valve yokes supplied by the Malcolm Foundry

Company, Incorporated to the Anchor/Darling Valve Company.

Requested action included identification of active valves in safety related systems which have valve parts cast by Malcolm Foundry, verification that such parts have the proper mechanical properties or replacement of defective components and/or valves.

In respect to the requested action, inquiries have been sent to manu-facturers and contractors who have supplied safety related valves for the WNP-2 project.

Identification of valves containing Malcolm Foundry components, was requested.

A preliminary listing of manufacturer s, whose valves will be included in the requested review, is:

Anchor/Darling Valve Company Anderson Greenwood 8

Company Atwood and Morrill BIF, A Unit of General Signal Company Borg-Warner Nuclear Valve Division Crosby Fisher Controls GPE Controls Hammel Dahl Velan Engineering Ltd.

G02-81-01 January 2,

1981 Telephone communications with Anchor/Darling Valve Company, which were confirmed by letter, indicated that none of the valves supplied for the WNP-2 project included Malcolm Foundry components.

The Malcolm Foundry castings were indicated as used only in valves produced by their Williamsport, Pennsylvania plant and specific valves, with such components, have been identified to the nuclear facilities for which they were supplied.

Responses received from GPE Controls, Morton Grove, Illinois and Velan Engineering Ltd., Montreal, Canada indicated that Malcolm Foundry has never been used as a source for valve components.

Completion of the required actions, within the requested time, is not possible since only the above indicated responses have been received to date.

As soon as all responses have been received and evaluated, a

supplementary report will be made to the Commission, which will provide a listing of affected valves, valve manufacturers, and our schedule for completion of valve inspections and component or valve replacement.

The inspection of valves containing Malcolm Foundry castings will include the use of Brinell hardness tests to establish material properties for the components in question.

It is expected the supplementary report can be provided during February 1981.

If you have additional questions please contact us.
