Dear Mr. Youngblood:

Subject:

NEW GEOLOGIC INFORMATION On August 15,

1980, a geotechnical consulting firm working for Puget Sound Power 8 Light Co.

on the Hanford Reservation, discovered addi-tional information which deals with the time of latest movement of earth faults on Gable Mountain near the center of the reservation.

Faulting on Gable Mountain was first studied in 1970 by the U.S.

Geological Survey (USGS) and the Supply System in conjunction with siting studies for the FFTF and WNP-2, respectively.

The area was later studied by the Supply System in 1973 and 1974 as part of the WNP-1/4 siting programs.

These faults are thought to have resulted from the forces which shaped all the ridges common to the Columbia

Plateau, over 40,000 years ago.

The findings of August 15 included minor offsets (less than four inches) that show displacement in flood gravels and clastic dikes of unknown, but probably late Pleistocene age.

From the information available at this time, it cannot be determined whether these offsets are due to minor continuation of tectonic activity which originally formed the mountain; soft sediment deformation asso-ciated with original implacement of the flood deposits; or some other phenomena, such as land sliding, which post-dates the flood deposits.

No conclusions regarding the significance, if any, have yet been reached.

At this point, we do not consider the information reportable under 10CFR21.

The Supply System and Puget Sound Power 5 Light will coordinate further field investigation and will keep the Nuclear Regulatory Commission informed through normal licensing channels.

Mr. M. D. Lynch, lJNP-2 Licensing Project Manager, was advised of this finding via a telephone conversation with Mr. Sorensen, of our staff, on August 18, 1980.

A subsequent conference call between represen-tatives of the

NRC, USGS, Puget Sound Power 8 Light and the Supply System took place on August 19.

For'urposes of your records, we have attached a list of Supply System.and Puget Sound Power 8 Light represen-tatives who participated in the conference call.

Very truly yours, bk Attachment cc:
