SUBJECT:
NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-244/98-04
Dear Dr. Mecredy:
This letter transmits the results of safety inspections conducted by NRC inspectors at the
Ginna Nuclear Power Plant from April 6 through May 17, 1998. At the conclusion of the
inspection on May 29, 1998, the findings were discussed with Mr. J. Widay and others of
your staff.
During the six week period covered by this inspection period, we noted good operational
performance throughout the period, particularly during an infrequently performed evolution
conducted to replace
a pressurizer pressure defeat switch in the control room.
We remain interested in the recent operational failures of Westinghouse power supply
breakers.
In response to these failures, we noted that your staff has significantly=
expanded the scope of corrective maintenance activities.
RGSE efforts to determine the
root causes for these recent failures will be evaluated
in a subsequent
inspection in
conjunction with our review of your response to the Inspection Report 98-03 Notice of
Violation.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice," a copy of this fetter
and its enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
