SUBJECT:
NRC INTEGRATED INSPECTION REPORT 50-244/97-05
Dear Dr. Mecredy:
This letter transmits the results of safety inspections conducted
by NRC inspectors at the
Ginna Nuclear Power Plant from May 19, 1997 through June 29, 1997. At the conclusion
of the inspection, the findings were discussed with Mr. J. Widay and others of your staff.
During the six week period covered by this inspection period, we noted safe and reliable
plant operation.
No plant transients occurred during this period, and there were no safety-
related equipment failures.
Failures in nonsafety-related
equipment important to safety
were few, minor in nature and promptly addressed.
The measures
taken to compensate
for errors or discrepancies
in control room panel indicators were conservative.
Overall, engineering
and maintenance
activities were effective.
Also, your radioactive
liquid and gaseous
effluent control programs were adequate,
although some actions to
address plant ventilation and spent fuel pool leakage issues have not been aggressively
pursued.
The revised offsite dose calculation manual represented
a notable improvement
over the previous version.
In accordance
with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter
and its enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
