SUBJECT:
NRC INTEGRATED INSPECTION REPORT 50-244/97-03
Dear Dr. Mecredy:
This letter transmits the findings of the safety inspection conducted
by NRC inspectors at
the Ginna Nuclear Power Plant from April 7 through May 18, 1997. At the conclusion of
the inspection, these findings were discussed with Mr. J. Widay and others of your staff.
During the six week period covered by this inspection, we observed
safe plant operations.
We noted good actions were taken in response to the unexpected
fouling of the service
water pump strainers.
Your follow-up actions to monitor for fouling to prevent a
recurrence
and assure continued operability of the service water system are appropriate.
We also noted auxiliary operator tours were conducted
in a competent
and professional
manner, and that Improved Technical Specification training for managers
and supervisors
was effective.
Implementation of the integrated
12-week work schedule was viewed as a
positive initiative and enhanced
communications
between operations
and site work groups.
In accordance
with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter
and its enclosures
will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
