GINNA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT DESIGN INSPECTION

Dear Dr. Mecredy:

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of our plans to conduct a design inspection of the R.E.

Ginna Nuclear Power Plant.

The inspection will be conducted in accordance with NRC Inspection Procedure (IP) 93801, "Safety System Functional Inspection."

For this inspection, we have selected the Component Cooling Water System and the Safety Injection System to perform our review.

We have scheduled the onsite portion of the inspection for the periods of July 7 through ll, 1997, July 21 through August 1,

1997, and August 11 through 15, 1997.

Your staff has indicated that there are no major conflicts with on-site activities during this period.

Mr. Jeffrey B. Jacobson, Team Leader, NRR, will interface with you and your staff regarding all matters related to this inspection.

The inspection will be performed using a team of five engineers from Stone

& Webster Engineering Corporation (SWEC) who have been contracted by the NRC for this purpose.

Mr. Robert B. Bradbury of SWEC who is part of the five person team will be the lead contractor engineer.

The inspection team will also be augmented by Mr.

Serge

Roudier, an inspector on loan to the NRC from the French Nuclear Safety Authority (DSIN).

We will be in contact with your staff regarding additional details for the inspection.
