SUBJECT:
NRC INTEGRATED INSPECTION REPORT 50-244/96-09
Dear Dr. Mecredy:
This report transmits the findings of safety inspections conducted
by NRC inspectors at the
Ginna Nuclear Power Plant, from August 25 through October 5, 1996. At the conclusion
of the inspection, the findings were discussed
with members of your staff.
Overall, we observed
safe plant operation.
Several instances of good maintenance
practices were noted.
Particularly noteworthy was the effective maintenance
performed
on the service water pump motor replacement.
Your staff's decision to shut down the
plant to perform maintenance
and modifications to the safety injection, main feedwater,
and auxiliary feedwater systems was appropriate.
These repairs were accomplished
in a
timely and well coordinated
manner.
We also noted that your recently revised radiological
survey requirements
of material transported to the station were effective in identifying a
piece of contaminated
equipment and a container with radiation levels above the
Department of Transportation
limits before they were brought onsite.
In accordance
with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice,"
a copy of this letter
and its enclosures
will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
