E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-244 Ref. (a): Letter from R.C. Mecredy (RG&E) to T. T. Martin (NRC) dated August 20, 1990 and letter from R.

C.

Mecredy (RG&E) to W. T. Russell (NRC) dated June 22, 1989.

Dear Mr. Johnson:

The purpose of this letter is to provide an update on the completion of plant modification work taken as corrective action to improve the existing Intermediate Building ventilation system so as to further minimize hot and cold spot building conditions.

This action, summarized in our referenced letters, involved the installation of a ventilation supply air opening from the Turbine Building so that ventilation air for the Intermediate Building is not drawn from outdoors during the winter months.

This supply air opening was also provided with suitable security and fire protection program provisions.

The extensive program which previously required actions to manually close all external openings and monitor plant conditions for extreme conditions in the Intermediate Building and other areas of Ginna Station for freeze protection purposes remains in effect.

This program has proven to be very effective in preventing and monitoring plant areas for freezing conditions which could impact plant equipment.

Our latest corrective actions have further reduced the potential for any adverse effects of cold weather conditions on safety-related equipment in the Intermediate Building.

RG&E is also in a study phase for potential upgrades for the Turbine Building ventilation systems.

The scope of this work is intended to address the need to provide controlled make up provisions such that potential freezing conditions in the Turbine Building are minimized further.

Any potential upgrades 9401110095

that are determined to be necessary for the building resulting from our study will be integrated within our overall plant modifications planning process.

Very truly yours, CAVi317 Robert C.
