R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-244 Ref.(a):
Inspection Report No. 50-244/90-26 dated January 26, 1991
Dear Mr. Johnson:
The purpose of this letter is to advise the completion of Unresolved Item 90-10-02, which requested.
"RG&E's verification of the separation of the AMSAC cable at one location in the cable run, specifically cable tray No.
- 372, a
non-safety-related tray containing AMSAC cable and cable tray No.
23, a safety-related tray,"
The 10CFR50.62 (ATWS) rule and our AMSAC modification Design Criteria (EWR 4230) required that a means be provided that is both diverse and independent from the existing Reactor Protection System for tripping the main steam turbine and initiating auxiliary feedwater flow following an ATWS event.
Design Analysis, "Electrical Separation AMSAC, EWR 4230, Rev. 0, approved 1/20/89,"
concluded that AMSAC circuits are physically separated.
from Reactor Protection System circuitry.
During the 1992 Refueling Outage a field verification was performed to obtain any additional data regarding the AMSAC cable separation at the location noted in the inspection report.
Subsequent to the results of the field verification, Electrical Engineering Circuit Schedules were again reviewed for the cable trays involved with AMSAC.
The combined results reconfirmed that the required separation exists.
The Design Analysis above is being revised to reflect the additional data obtained during the field verification, however,
'Id( its revision will not affect the conclusions regarding cable separation.
Section 3.18 of reference (a) noted that circuit separations

ongoing.
While that work request is related, generically to circuit separations at Ginna Station, it represents a significant positive
- action, and its schedule and completion is not essential to the completion of the subject unresolved item.
The scope of work under
,EWR 4885 involves the circuit separation evaluation of safety-related circuits only, not the routings of'll electrical field cables as noted in reference (a).
Very truly yours, GAH/223 Robert C.
