Dear Mr. Johnson:
The purpose of this letter is to provide notification concerning RG&E's intention to substitute ISI examinations of two (2)
Steam Generator ASME Class 2 welds.
Specifically, we intend to substi-tute examinations of two (2)
Class 2 welds from Steam Generator (S/G)
"B" to the identical welds on S/G "A".
The examination requirements for Steam Generators that are Class 2 components are specified within Table IWC-2500-1.
ASME Section XI IWC-2412, "Inspection Program B" provides details related to the inspection interval.
Presently, certain ISI examinations are scheduled to be performed.

are identified on attached Figure 1 as the "Tube Sheet to Ring Weld" (Category C-A, Item C1.30) and "Lower Shell to Transition Weld."
(Category C-A, Item C1.10).
A Preservice and two (2) Inservice examinations have been performed on both of these welds on the "B" Steam Generator.
Review of examination records did not reveal any deficiencies.
The action to substitute examinations from S/G "B" to "A" for two (2) identical welds conforms with ASME Section XI IWC'-2420(a) in that the established schedule of Steam Generator examinations are being repeated, to the extent practical.
The outcome of the Code allowed alternative will provide the following benefits:

Substantial reduction in personnel asbestos exposure and an expected personnel dose reduction of up to 220 rem, and 9iii050276 9ii028

Significant reduction of man-hours to perform scaffolding installation, insulation removal, re-insulation and scaf-folding removal.
Since this approach conforms with code requirements, prior NRC approval should not be required.
Therefore, we do not expect a
response from the Commission.
