Postponement of EWR 4770 R.E.

Dear Mr. Johnson:
In RG&E's November 17, 1989 letter from Robert Mecredy to William
- Russell, we stated that EWR 4770 was initiated to develop and install a new boric acid storage tank level monitoring system to replace the existing bubbler type.
The reason for this modification, originally scheduled for the 1991 refueling outage, was to remove the need for weekly rodding of the bubbler tubes as preventive maintenance.
Subsequent to that time, RG&E has initiated a study which would.
allow deletion of the need for high concentration (12 weight percent) boric acid.
Based on preliminary results, it appears that this analysis will be successful.
We have thus postponed EWR 4770 until the results of the analysis are complete.
At that time, we will determine if any modifications to the BAST level instrumentation should be made.
In the
- meantime, RG&E will continue the weekly rodding of the bubbler
- tubes, in accordance with Technical Specification Table
- 4. 1-1, item 14.
