Subject:

Fire Protection at R.

E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-244

Dear Mr. Crutchfield:

In the Fire Protection Safety Evaluation Report for Ginna Station which was issued by the NRC on February 14,

1979, item 3.1.30 (Fire Door Supervision) reads as follows:

3.1.30 Fire Door Supervision All fire doors will be electrically supervised with time delayed alarm and annunciation in a constantly occupied area, or they will be locked closed.

The purpose of this letter is to request a revision of item 3.1.30.

Twenty-two (22) fire doors will be installed at Ginna Station and seventeen (17) will be electrically supervised.

Five (5) fire doors not electrically supervised will be installed in conjunction with security/pressure doors.

The doors will be'ocated in the fire barriers between the turbine building and the following:

A. and B battery rooms, air handling room, and A and B

diesel rooms.

None of the unsupervised doors are installed in areas protected by automatic total flooding gas suppression systems.

The security/pressure doors are a part of the turbine building pressure

boundary, and the fire doors are a part of the fire barrier.

Authorized access to these areas is from the turbine building through the security/pressure door and the fire door.

The Ginna Station security force inspects vital areas and vital area doors each eight

( 8) hours.

During this inspection the security force will check the fire doors that are not electrically supervised, to verify that they are in the closed position.

June 3,

1981 Mr. Dennis M. Crutchfield SHEET NO.

Upon your approval section 3.1.30 shall read:

3.1.30 All fire doors will be electrically supervised with time delayed alarm and annunciation in a constantly occupied area, or kept closed and inspected daily to verify that they are in the closed position.

Because the relay room is protected by an automatic total flooding gas suppression

system, relay room fire doors shall be electrically supervised with time delayed alarm and annunciation in a constantly occupied area.

Very truly yours, J.

E. Maier
