Containment Tendon Monitoring Program R.

Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-244

Dear Mr. Crutchfield:

This letter explains the current status of the tendon moni-toring program at Ginna Station as described in our letter dated February 13, 1981.

Four load cells were scheduled to be put, in operation to record the force levels existing in tendons 13, 53, 93 and 133.

On March 13, 1981, after regaging and reinstalling load cell no.

13, all four cells were calibrated in place with a calibrated stressing rod which had been instrumented with a strain gage.

Load cell no.

53 was found to be inoperable and was removed and sent to Brewer Engineering Laboratories.

It had been determined that the strain gages in the load cell were damaged due to infiltration of moisture and filler grease into the wire leads.

Load cell no.

93 was recently disconnected from the data logger after it too was found not to be functioning properly.

It is believed that this cell has experienced the same problem as cell no.

53 after recording low ground readings.

Dennis N. Crutchfield SHEET NO.

Upon receipt and reinstallation of cell no.

53, we plan to remove cell no.

93 and send it to Brewer Engineering Laboratories for repairs.

The plant will be in its annual refueling shutdown when cell no.

93 is returned and limitations on manpower will make reinstallation very difficult.

Therefore, for the remainder of the monitoring period prior to the June 1981 Surveillance Program we propose to monitor only the three remaining tendons and reinstall cell no.

93 if scheduling can be arranged.

Very truly, yours,'o E. hlaier xc:
