Containment Purge and Vent Valves R.

E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-244

Dear Mr. Crutchfield:

In a telephone conversation with a member of your staff, Mr. Richard Snaider, we were asked to provide an update of our activities regarding containment purge and vent valves.

Our previous letter on this subject, dated June 16, 1981 summarized interim actions being taken and schedules for future work.

These remain in effect, except as described below.

I On June 26; 1981,'e were notified by the containment purge valve manufacturer, Henry Pratt,, Inc., that plant specific analyses they had performed showed acceptable maximum valve opening angles of 30 to 50 The allowable opening angle for a given plant depended on the specific equipment and conditions in that plant.

Plant specific analyses have been performed for the Ginna valves by another consultant.

These analyses demonstrate acceptable valve closing using ASME service level D allowable stress criteria with the valves open to 50 when subjected to LOCA loadings.

However, the valve may not be capable of being opened following closure.

If the valve opening is limited to 40

, the integrity is assured and all stresses are within ASME service level B or C criteria thus assuring the ability to reopen the valves.

To provide additional conservatism until final analyses and valve modifications are performed,'he valves are being maintained closed while the plant is critical until the travel stops can be adjusted to limit valve opening to 40 instead of 50 Very truly yours, alliO4>>~9 es>ohio DR ADOCK 05000244 PDR n
