Turbine Disc Cracking R. E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-244

Dear Mr. Crutchfield:

Based upon your letter of August 28, 1981 and our involvement with the Westinghouse Turbine Disc Integrity Task Force, we are in agreement with the Westinghouse method for determining inspection frequencies for Ginna Station's low pressure rotors discs.

Therefore, we are committing to inspect and re-inspect Ginna's low pressure rotors discs on a schedule consistent with the West-inghouse criteria as outlined in your Safety Evaluation of August 28.

However, our spare rotor was new in 1979 and. has not been inspected since manufacturing.

Based upon the two original rotors discs being free of any detectable flaws after significant running times (approximately 60,000 hours0 days
0 hours
0 weeks
0 months
),

inspection of the spare rotor discs was scheduled before the disc postulated crack growth rates would reach the inspection limit.

This inspection would not be required before the normal maintenance and inspection outage for this rotor.

The present plan is to perform the rotor discs in-spection at that time.

Very truly yours, xc: J. Schmerling (Westinghouse)
