Dear Mr. Chairman:

The recent events at the Robert E. Ginna nuclear power plant in Ontario, New York cause me to inquire about the steam generator tubing deterioration that seems to be a growing problem at utility nuclear powerplants around the country. The incident at Ginna was apparently not an isolated occurence, the first recorded rupture of such tubing taking place in 1975.

As a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, and a representative of a state that relies on nuclear energy to furnish 18.1% of its electrical power genera-tion, I am concerned about the consequences of what would appear to be a growing problem as our commercial nuclear plants age. I respectfully request that you give me a detailed accounting of this problem, a summary of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's past activities in this area, and an outline of how the NRC plans to deal with this problem in the future.

Sincerel Daniel Patrick ynihan Mr. Nunzio Palladino Chairman, Nuclear Regulatory Commission 1717 H Street, N.W.
