Dear Mr. Crutchfield:
This letter is in response to the requirement published in 10CFR 50.49(g),
which states that each licensee shall identify by May 20, 1983:
1.
a list of electric equipment within the scope of 10CFR 50.49 which is already qualified, 2.
a schedule for the qualification of equipment not presently qualified, and/or 3.
a schedule for the replacement of equipment not presently qualified.
The R.
E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant has been undergoing extensive review of the status of the environmental qualification of electrical equipment important to safety, initiated as part of the Sy'stematic Evaluation Program (SEP),
by Franklin Research Center and the NRC.
The status of this review is contained in the Safety Evaluation Report from Dennis M. Crutchfield, NRC, to John E. Maier, RGaE, dated December 13,
- 1982, and the attached FRC Technical Evaluation "Report TER-C5257-454.
In order to maintain a consistent basis, this SER/TER will be used as the reference from which to reply to 10CFR 50.49.
, The list of electrical, equipment important to safety located in,a har'sh"environment is noted as "NRC Category" I.A, I.B. II.A, II.B, II.C, and III.A i'n Table 4-1 of the,TER.
As determined in the TER, the NRC Category I;A ("equipment qualified" ) and III.A
("equipment exempt from qualification" ) items meet all qualifi-cation requirements of the "DOR Guideline's."
NRC Category I.B items are those which RGRE has committed to replace,

to meet the environmental qualification requirements of the "DOR Guidelines."
The schedules for replacement were provided to the NRC in a letter from John E. Maier, RG&E, to Dennis M. Crutchfield, NRC, dated February 1,
1983.
The "NRC Category" II.A items are those for which qualification is not yet established.
Many of these items were addressed in RG6E's February 1,
1983 letter.
The "NRC Category" II.C items are those for which qualification has been established, with the exception of qualified life.
RGSE plans to complete documentation of the environmental qualification of the NRC Category II.A and II.C items, on a schedule intended to establish a goal of final environmental qualification by the 1984 refueling outage (this is the second refueling outage after March 31, 1982).
Although RG6E will strive'o establish final environmental qualification by the end of the 1984.refueling outage, it is possible that equipment analysis, test, design, procurement, and installation problems, as well as lack of timely response to our submittals from the NRC could result in some delays.
If it appears that such unavoidable delays could occur, RGSE will promptly notify the NRC with the reasons, and will request approval of a revised schedule.
